On June 13, 2017, the Pennsylvania House Labor and Industry Committee approved House Bill 18 in a divided vote. House Bill 18 is designed to limit the prescription of opioids by formulas that regulate the dosage, amounts and duration times that prescription drugs can be administered. Opponents of the bill are concerned that it will interfere with the independent decision-making of physicians who are in the best position to determine the appropriate care for patients. Others are worried that this bill is the first step towards a system in which insurers, and not doctors, control medical treatment. According to a spokesman, Governor Wolf is opposed to the Bill in its current form.
